FAQ: settings and practice

Short answers to the questions that keep coming back. Each answer links to the chapter that explains the why.

Sensitivity

What is the best sensitivity?

There is no single one for everyone: it depends on your grip, your mousepad size, the game and your style. The optimal sens test measures what works for you without telling you which sens you are testing.

Should I copy a pro's sens?

It is a fine starting point if you have no reference, not a guarantee: a pro has thousands of hours with that sens and specific gear. Compare it with yours in cm/360 on the pro pages, then adjust.

How long should I keep a new sens before judging it?

Several days of play at the very least, ideally a few weeks. The first games always feel strange, whether the new sens is better or not.

How do I keep the same sens in another game?

Keep the same cm/360, not the same number: every game has its own scale. The converter does the math for 19 games.

Mouse

Which DPI should I use: 400, 800 or 1600?

DPI alone does not change your aim: only DPI × sens matters. A higher DPI gives a faster desktop cursor and finer steps in game; it is a comfort, not a decisive edge. Details.

Should I turn off Enhance pointer precision?

For aiming, yes in most cases: it is acceleration, so the same movement does not always give the same result. In a raw input game it has no effect anyway. Details.

Does Windows pointer speed change my in-game sens?

Only if the game reads the Windows pointer. With raw input, no. The 6th notch out of 11 (the default) does not alter your movement. Details.

Polling rate: 1000 Hz or 8000 Hz?

1000 Hz reports movement every millisecond, 8000 Hz every 0.125 ms. The gain is real but small, and 8000 Hz asks more of your CPU and battery. Try it if your PC keeps stable FPS. Details.

Display

Should I play 4:3 stretched?

In CS2, 4:3 stretched makes models about 33% wider but cuts horizontal view from 106° to 90°. It is a trade-off, popular with pros, not a requirement. Other games behave differently. Details.

Is there any point in FPS above my monitor's refresh rate?

A little: without V-Sync, the displayed image is more recent, so slightly less delay, at the cost of screen tearing. Stable FPS matters more than the peak. Details.

Sound and gear

Stereo or 7.1 headset to hear footsteps?

A headset only has two drivers: 7.1 is a simulation. A good stereo headset with the game's HRTF is enough; avoid stacking two spatializers. Details.

Large or small mousepad?

It has to fit your sens: at 50 cm/360, a 180° turn needs 25 cm of pad. The lower your sens, the more room you need. Details.

Improving

Why do I lose duels when my aim trainer scores are good?

Because a duel is also played before you shoot: positioning, timing, information, picking the duel. An aim trainer works on mechanics, not decisions. Details.

How long should I practice aim each day?

Consistency beats volume: 15 to 20 minutes a day beats one long session a week. Keep time for real matches played with a goal. Start the routine.
